Role Summary

Our team is designing a new suite of applications for a successful insurance-tech startup while also helping them improve their product design process. It's a great opportunity to help a client define their UX from the ground up.

In this role, you will work closely with product managers and engineers to guide projects from MVP to launch and iterate on their evolution.

While years of experience are not an absolute predictor of success, these roles do require some design maturity - typically acquired in 2-3 years of work experience. That said, we will provide plenty of on-the-job training and guidance.

To be successful in this role, you must be comfortable with:

  • Working in lean and agile

  • Working closely with product managers and engineers in full-stack product teams

  • Iterative/progressive product design and development

  • Working with complex data and technical systems

  • A systems-minded approach to design

  • Leading teams and stakeholders through the discovery and definition process

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Lead discovery exercises, audits, and secondary research
  • Synthesize insights from research and audits
  • Facilitate collaborative design workshops and activities
  • Lead solution definition, in close collaboration with Product Manager and Engineering Leads
  • Collaborate with Product Manager to define an iterative and progressive design roadmap
  • Produce design artifacts in Figma, including wireframes, clickable prototypes, design references, and design systems
  • Produce as-needed lightweight design documents in Miro, Google Sheets, Slides, or Docs, including user flows, story maps, data analysis, Jira ticket content, and stakeholder presentations
  • Produce as-needed UI assets in Illustrator or Photoshop
  • Conduct design reviews with engineers and provide design support for the development process

About You

Must Have:

  • Experience working with cross-functional product teams including product managers and engineers
  • Experience with full-stack product design: research, structure, surface. (But you are not expected to be an expert at all levels)
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Experience and fluency in designing for web and mobile platforms
  • Experience and fluency producing user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and other design artifacts
  • Experience and fluency with Figma for design, prototyping, hand-offs, component libraries, and design systems
  • Foundational graphic design understanding and ability (This is not a visual design role, but our wireframes and prototypes must follow graphic design principles and best practices)
  • Education in human-centered design methodologies and practices
  • Experience and fluency with atomic design and a systems-minded approach to product design
  • Experience with user research including conducting interviews, facilitating workshops, and qualitative data synthesis
  • Experience with Agile and Scrum workflows
  • Familiarity with design guidelines such as Material Design and Apple Human Interface Guidelines

Nice to Have:

  • Familiarity with data formats such as JSON and XML
  • Familiarity with designing for frontend frameworks such as Angular and React
  • Familiarity with designing for complex workflows and tasks

You’ll be a good fit if:

  • You are an entrepreneurial designer interested in strategic design and implementation.
  • You love design as a problem-solving practice and are curious about how it may be applied in different spaces. You are drawn to “wicked problems”.
  • You’re not shy about sharing in-progress work. You love collaborative design, co-creating with others, and involving non-designers in the process.
  • You are driven by outcomes over process. You are familiar with design thinking and lean UX methods, but you are not afraid to customize methodologies or invent your own when needed.
  • You have excellent visual taste, but value building things ugly before making them pretty. But you never really build things ugly.
  • No one’s ever had to google anything for you because that’s your first instinct.
  • You are interdisciplinary by nature. The top of your “T” model is more like a giant tree with branches extending into everything. You synthesize everything.
  • You love learning about people and technology, but maybe a little more about people.

About Space And Flow

Space And Flow is a full-stack product design practice specializing in guiding clients through the challenges of launching and growing new products. We work closely with client stakeholders, product managers, and developers to iterate on product development from concept through beta and validating product-market fit.

Since launching in late 2019, we have successfully served clients ranging from new start-ups to mature/acquired start-ups to enterprise and government entities.

Here's what our team likes about working here:

“No politics, no barriers, no fighting to justify good design practices. Everyone’s head is in the right place and we all help each other reach our goals.”

“The work is highly relevant and meaningful, the relationships are supportive, and the interconnected holistic approach is uniquely human-centered. It’s a breath of fresh air when so many environments can be mired in cynicism for designers.”

We are designer-owned and operated. In addition to serving great clients and needs, we hope to be a platform for launching great designers. We are here to learn, grow together, and support each other in all of our aspirations.

We are building a company based on what we believe work should be: ethical, empowering, healthy, and collaborative.
